Choosing Sunglasses: UV Labels, Fit & Questions

When comparing sunglasses, look at the product's stated UV protection as well as its style. A dark tint or a familiar brand name alone does not establish the protection of the particular pair.

Check the UV label

The FDA's sun-safety guidance recommends sunglasses labelled UV400 or 100% UV protection. It also notes that lens darkness does not determine UV protection: lighter tints can provide the same UV protection as very dark lenses. Check the product label rather than inferring protection from colour.

Compare shape and coverage

The FDA suggests considering larger frames or wraparound styles to limit light entering from the sides. Compare how the pair sits and ask questions about its stated protection. For questions about your eye health, speak with your eye-care provider.

Compare polarization and screen readability

Polarized lenses reduce glare reflected from water and roads, which can be useful for daytime driving and boating. Check the pair’s UV specification separately; polarization alone does not establish UV protection. Cleveland Clinic’s guide to polarization.

Polarization can also make screens harder to read. Before buying, look at the phone or navigation screen you normally use through the lenses. Check a vehicle’s instrument panel only while safely parked. This checks screen readability, not UV protection. Johns Hopkins Medicine’s sunglasses guidance.

If you need prescription-compatible or light-adaptive sunglasses, ask which options are available for the particular frame and what is included in the price.
