Can You Put New Lenses in Old Frames?

You may be able to keep a frame you like and order new lenses for it. The answer depends on the frame's condition, the lens order and whether the optical shop accepts that particular pair.

Please contact us before bringing in frames you already own. We need to confirm their suitability before agreeing to use them. Here is what to check before you decide.

Be clear about what you want to keep

“Can I reuse my glasses?” can mean two different things:

  • Keeping your frame and having new lenses made for it.
  • Keeping your existing lenses and moving them into another frame.

The second request has extra constraints. The lens shape and positioning have to work with the replacement frame; a lens that fits inside an opening is not automatically suitable. ZEISS explains that transferring existing lenses can be limited by the measurements used to position them, particularly with customized or progressive lenses. Read the manufacturer's explanation.

When you contact the shop, say which part you hope to keep. It makes the next conversation more useful.

Have the frame assessed before committing to lenses

Liking the frame is a good reason to ask about reusing it. Its condition still matters. ZEISS's guidance describes fitting new lenses into existing frames when the frame material remains in working order.

Tell the shop about anything you have noticed: a loose hinge, a bent arm, a crack, a missing part or a previous repair. You do not need to identify the material or diagnose the damage yourself. Keep any detached pieces and avoid forcing the frame back into shape.

If the frame already slips or sits unevenly, mention that too. Ask whether the fit can be addressed before you invest in another lens order. Our repair and adjustment page explains how to arrange an assessment.

Bring the current prescription from your eye-care provider

For prescription lenses, have a current copy of your eyeglass prescription available. SpecOptics fills existing prescriptions; we do not perform eye exams or change prescriptions.

If you have misplaced the prescription, ask the prescriber's office for a copy. The FTC explains that after an eye exam that includes a refraction, the prescriber must provide your eyeglass prescription at no extra charge, before offering to sell you glasses. You can choose where to buy your eyewear. Read the FTC's prescription guidance.

For an expired prescription or a question about a change in your vision, contact your eye-care provider before ordering.

Compare what the whole order includes

Ask for the proposed lens specification and total price. Useful questions include:

  • Which lens design, material and coatings are included?
  • Can those lenses be supplied for my prescription and this frame?
  • Does the quote include fitting, and is any frame work needed first?
  • What are the terms for working on frames I already own?
  • What happens if the frame is found unsuitable before work begins?

Reusing a frame does not establish the price of the lenses or guarantee a saving. If you are comparing it with a new pair, compare the complete quotes with the same lens requirements.

Plan for the time without your glasses

Before handing over your only pair, ask whether the shop needs to keep it, for how long, and how collection will work. Do not assume a same-day service. Ask us about the timing for your order.

Tell the shop if you rely on this pair every day. Knowing the practical steps in advance helps you decide whether the arrangement will work for you.

Ask about your frames before making the trip

A first message can be simple: “I have frames I would like to keep and want to ask about new lenses. Can you assess them, and what should I bring?” You can also mention visible damage or an earlier repair.

Call or Text 813-421-1453 to discuss your pair and arrange an appointment at SpecOptics, 10347 Cross Creek Blvd, Suite C4, Tampa, FL 33647. Visits are by appointment.
